At Stepping Stones we follow the Early Years Foundation Stage Curriculum (EYFS) below is a brief outline of what is included in the foundation stage.
This is broken down into three prime areas of learning:
- Personal, Social, and Emotional Development; Making relationships, self-confidence and self-awareness, managing feelings and behaviour.
- Physical Development: Moving and handling and Health and Self Care.
- Communication and Language: Listening and Attention, Understanding and Speaking.
And four specific areas of learning.
- Literacy: Reading and Writing
- Mathematics: Number and Shape, Space and Measure
- Understanding the World: People and Communities, The world and Technology.
- Expressive Arts and Design: Exploring and using media and materials and Being Imaginative.
Our Observations are broken down into the age ranges below:
- Birth to 11 months
- 8-20 months
- 16-26 months
- 22-36 months
- 30-50 months
- 40-60 months
As you can see these age/stage ranges overlap, as we recognise that all children are unique and develop at their own rates. They are not fixed age boundaries but suggest a typical range of development. By continually observing your child through play and adult/child led activities on a weekly basis we are able to build a bigger picture of what your child is achieving. This then gets recorded on the child’s individual assessment record sheet, located at the back of the child’s learning journey. On completion, this is then passed onto your child’s school for completion.
Each child will have a Key Person, their role is to develop a relationship built on trust and respect with the child, supporting them through a variety of different child and adult led activities based on the Key Persons knowledge of your child. Their job is to enhance and extend their development and learning. Each child will have a learning journey that the Key Person updates with observations in accordance to the curriculum above. This can be seen at anytime and we welcome input from parents, if there is ever a milestone that your child achieves at home, we relay want to hear about it. Each class has ‘WOW’ sheets that you are welcome to take to record their achievement’s on, we love to hear what your little people are doing when they are not at the setting. This will then be out into the child’s profiles.
Here at Stepping Stones we try to create a home from home environment where your child can reach their full potential. A happy child is of upmost importance to us and we strive to ensure that they are as happy as they possibly can be whilst in our care. Our team of dedicated staff are always on hand to help if you ever need them, parent partnership is key to guarantee the happiness of your children.
We are currently in the process of transitioning over to Tapestry, the online journals. Which will replace the current paper versions we use now. We are very excited to be using Tapestry and hope all our parents will enjoy having updates on their children throughout the week, it is another way of including our parents in their children’s lives within nursery.
